In July the UNCCD Executive Secretary Ibrahim Thiaw announced that Dr Tina Birmpili of Greece has been appointed as the next Deputy Executive Secretary of UNCCD, replacing the outgoing Pradeep Monga on 1 October 2020. Pradeep Monga of India forged a good working relationship with civil society and we shall miss his positive presence at the UNCCD.
Dr Tina Birmpili holds a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) and a Master of Science (MSc) in Environmental Management and Economics from Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, London and also brings a wealth of experience to the position.
She is currently the Executive Secretary of the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer and its Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer. As a former Minister of Environment, Energy and Climate Change in Greece with a background in policy analysis and implementation on sustainable development related issues and management at all levels of governance she promises to be a great asset to the UNCCD.
Drynet welcomes her to the Convention, and our members look forward to working with her.
