Reflecting on Drynet members’ contributions to sustaining the global drylands and their people
15.06.2023
World Day to Combat Desertification (WDCD) is celebrated every year on 17 June. It aims to raise public awareness that land degradation neutrality (LDN) is possible through multidisciplinary efforts by all stakeholders from around the world to combat desertification.
Under the theme of Her Land. Her Rights: Advancing Gender Equality and Land Restoration Goals, this year’s WDCD shines a global spotlight on the land rights of women and girls. It mainstreams women and girls into the forefront of global land restoration and drought resilience efforts. Investing in equal access to land and related assets for women and other marginalised groups is a direct investment in their future and, ultimately, that of humanity’s future.
In honour of this day, Drynet members have published a few posts sharing some snippets of their work and commitment to dryland communities.

Both ENDS
Nathalie holds a clod of humus-rich soil on a farm in Slovenia. In the summer of 2019, Nathalie, as a representative of Both ENDS, was invited to Slovenia for the annual meeting of the iSQAPER project. She visited several farms and demonstration plots together with farmers, soil scientists, agronomists and policy analysts. The trip and the change of scenery invited the participants to a deep exchange of knowledge about soils and the ecosystem; about agroecological practices and Slovenian farmer life; and about how policy and funding affects daily practice. It was fun, educational and inspiring. Knowledge development that takes place outside the classrooms and meeting rooms is so valuable and provides so many new insights!

I was probably inspired by my grandfather, a farmer growing around 150 palm trees in El Hadjeb. I was introduced to it at a very early age, when I was 6 years old and went with him to the garden to lend a hand. But it’s not just because I’m attached to the job that I chose it, it’s also because it pays well. There’s a lot of work available around my home, so I don’t have to travel to fill my diary”.
